How to Transfer Shopify Store Ownership to a Buyer

The exact steps, the full handover checklist, and the one rule that keeps you from getting burned: money in escrow before anything moves.

Published Sep 17, 2026 · 9 min read
Short answer: in your Shopify admin, go to Settings → General, and in the Transfer store section click Manage. Choose "Transfer store to a new owner outside your business," enter the buyer's email, and click Transfer - they get an invitation email to accept. But the admin is only one piece: you also hand over the domain, billing, apps, email list, ad accounts, and supplier contacts. And you do all of it only after the buyer's payment is in escrow, because Shopify can't reverse a transfer.
The one rule: transfer nothing until the buyer has funded a third-party escrow service, and release the money only after the handover is done. A Shopify ownership transfer can't be undone by support - if you send it on a promise to pay, your only recourse is asking the new owner to voluntarily send it back.

Step by step: transfer the Shopify store

These are the current steps from Shopify's own documentation (Shopify now uses an organization model, so the flow lives under General, not under Users and permissions):

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings → General.
  2. In the Transfer store section, click Manage.
  3. Select Transfer store to a new owner outside your business, then click Continue. Re-authenticate if prompted.
  4. Enter the email address for the new owner.
  5. Click Transfer. The buyer receives an invitation email and accepts ownership with their own login.

The buyer does not need to be a staff member first - the invitation handles it. That said, adding them as staff for the handover period is a useful courtesy: it lets them learn the store, check the settings, and confirm everything works before the final transfer goes through. You can do that under Settings → Users and permissions.

What else transfers (the real checklist)

The Shopify admin is maybe half the sale. A store the buyer can actually run means handing over everything the revenue depends on:

AssetHow it moves
DomainUnlock it and push it to the buyer's registrar, or transfer it within Shopify if it's Shopify-managed.
Billing & paymentsThe new owner adds their own payment method and Shopify Payments details after accepting the transfer.
Third-party appsEach app's subscription bills the store owner - the buyer re-authorizes or re-subscribes where needed so nothing lapses.
Email listExported and imported into the buyer's email tool, or the account credentials handed over.
Ad accounts & pixelReassigned through the ad platform's business manager, so conversion history isn't lost.
Social profilesLogin and admin rights handed over, or ownership reassigned where the platform allows.
Supplier contacts & agreementsIntroduce the buyer and confirm terms carry over - the single most important item for a dropshipping store.
Operating documentsSOPs, creative files, product photos, and a short training call or two.

Anything on this list that doesn't move is value the buyer didn't get - and a reason for them to renegotiate or walk. The terms in that supplier row are covered in depth in how to sell a dropshipping store.

Restrictions that block a transfer

A few things stop a transfer before it starts, so check them early:

How long the handover takes

The store transfer itself is minutes. The full migration - domain, apps, ad accounts, supplier intros, and a training call - is where the time goes. In a published Empire Flippers case study, migration took 11 days of a 21-day total from listing to payout. Plan for one to two weeks and stay responsive; buyers who get quick answers close quickly.

Doing it safely

Every safe store sale follows the same order: buyer funds escrow, seller transfers the assets, escrow releases the money. The transfer being irreversible is exactly why that order isn't optional. On 14stores the deal closes directly between you and the buyer after a five-day auction sets the price, and the handover follows this same escrow-first sequence. FAQ

How do I transfer a Shopify store to a new owner?

Settings → General → Transfer store → Manage. Choose "Transfer store to a new owner outside your business," click Continue, re-authenticate, enter the buyer's email, and click Transfer. They accept via an invitation email.

Does the buyer need a Shopify account first?

No. The new owner doesn't need to be an existing staff member or user - the invitation email sets them up. Adding them as staff first is optional but helps the handover.

Can a Shopify ownership transfer be undone?

No. Shopify Support can't reverse a transfer for security reasons; the new owner would have to transfer it back. This is why payment goes through escrow and releases only after transfer.

What transfers besides the store?

Domain, billing and payment method, third-party app subscriptions, email list, ad accounts and pixel, social profiles, supplier contacts and agreements, and operating documents.

Who pays outstanding Shopify bills after transfer?

If you haven't met your billing threshold at transfer, the new owner is responsible for outstanding bills. Settle or disclose pending charges as part of the deal.

Sell it before you transfer it

The transfer is the easy part. Getting a real price first is the hard part - five days on the floor, every bid visible, $199 flat and 0% commission.
